I am an Assistant Professor of Education, Research Faculty, in the Department of Educational Leadership, Foundations and Policy in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. I also have an affiliation in EdPolicyWorks — The Center on Education Policy and Workforce Competitiveness. My research interests center on the policies and practices that affect students who attend community colleges and open access universities. In my dissertation, I focus on the effectiveness of online learning at these postsecondary institutions. In all of my research, I use insights from human capital theory and techniques derived from data science to better understand how policy can help students at open access institutions succeed.

I have co-authored papers that have been published or are forthcoming in the Economics of Education Review, the Journal of Higher Education, and the Journal of the European Higher Education Area. I am also the author and maintainer of two open source software packages meant to facilitate higher education research and the teaching of data science.
